Computer Training

The Palm Beach County Library offers a wide variety of computer training at our Main Library and in all our branches. We offer free lecture-based learning class and hands-on training in our two computer labs - one at the Main Library and the other at North County Regional. All our computer classes are explained on this page.

All our classes are free of charge.  We welcome repeat students.  Call your library to sign up for these lecture classes.  No sign-up is required for classes at the Main Library.

Hands- On Training

These programs are available at the Main Library Computer Center and our North County Regional Computer Lab.  Seating for these classes is limited and reservations are required unless otherwise specified.  Call the Main Library at (561) 233-2600 and North County at (561) 626-6133 ask for the Reference department to reserve your place. The Okeechobee Blvd. Branch is also hosting hands-on classes. Please call 561-233-1880 to reserve a space.

Beginning Computers
Confused by the terms hardware and software? Mystified by your PC? If so, learn the basics about computers at this free presentation. This class covers hardware, software, files, and networks. For Beginners. (90 mins.)

Beginning Internet
This is a basic introduction to the Internet, explaining what it is and how it works. No previous experience with computers is necessary. In this class we cover the World Wide Web, Browsers,  Internet Service Providers, and E-mail. For Beginners. (2 hrs.)  

Internet Tricks and Tips
This lecture provides instruction on using different Web search tools and discusses helpful tips and tricks for using your browser.  It also goes into detail on computer viruses, cookies, spam, and plug-ins. Some Computer Experience Necessary. (2 hrs.) 

Buying a Computer
This class will provide you with a plan of action to buy your computer. We will break down the process into easy steps and teach you the important terms and concepts that you will run into along the way. Some Computer Experience Necessary. (1 hr.)

Travel on the Click
Do you love to travel? Are you looking for good travel resources and tools? Do you want to find good prices for tickets and hotel rooms? Then you don't want to miss "Travel on the Click." Some Computer Experience Necessary. (1 hr.)

Look It Up! @ your library
Learn how to access valuable information for free through the library web site. Join us as we explore our exciting electronic databases and then use our new web catalog to locate items, find book reviews, and renew your materials. For Beginners. (1 hr.)

Savvy Online Shopping
Every year, more and more people are using the World Wide Web to do their shopping for everything from groceries to luxuries. In this lecture class, you will learn important issues relating to online shopping, such as how to find product reviews, do comparison pricing, and order items through the Internet. Some Computer Experience Necessary. (75 mins.)
Cyber-Security
Theft of electronic information is a growing problem in our society as more and more of our information is stored on computers. Learn more about securing your computer, protecting your identity, and other cyber threats in this special class. (1 hr.)
Hot Technology
Keep up with the newest technology and Internet innovations in this class. Learn about digital cameras, blogs, MP3 players, and more. (60 mins.)
Basic Word Processing (Hands-On)
Learn the basics of using Microsoft Word to create school reports or résumés. Some computer experience necessary. (60 min.)
Email Basics
Prerequisites: Beginning Internet & Mouse Experience
Learn how to use Yahoo (a free, web-based e-mail program), how to send and receive mail, and create folders and an address book. (60 min.)
Internet Basics (Hands–On)
Also known as Browser Basics
Prerequisite: Beginning Internet
Learn more about the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. Experience using a mouse required. (60 min.)
Mousing Around (Hands-On)
Also known as Mouse Practice
Practice using a mouse in a self-paced setting for beginners. (60 min.)
Search Tools (Hands-On)
Prerequisite: Beginning Internet
Learn how to use a Web Directory, search engines, and a Meta-search engine, plus other specialized search tools. (60 min.)
Word Processing II/Typing and Editing a Document (Hands-On)
Learn all about the different functions of Microsoft Word. Attendees will get hands-on experience creating, editing, and printing a document. (60 min.)
Your Library Online (Hands-On)
Prerequisite: Beginning Internet
Learn how to access your library account from home, renew your materials, locate items, place holds, find book reviews, and more. (60 min.)
