Holiday Fire Safety
By Cilla Jacobson, System Youth Services Coordinator |
Each year, fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 Americans, injure nearly 2,000 more, and cause $990 million in damages, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). There are some simple life-saving steps you can take to ensure a safe holiday.
Decorations
-
Use only nonflammable decorations and place them away from heat sources.
-
If using an artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant.
Lights
-
Maintain your holiday lights, inspecting them each year for frayed wires, broken or cracked light sockets and replace them if wear is found. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory.
-
Do not overload electrical outlets. Do not link more than three light strands unless the directions indicate that it is safe. Check the wires periodically. They should not be warm to the touch.
-
Never leave holiday lights on unattended.
Candles
-
If you use candles, make sure the holders are stable and place them away from areas of activity where they cannot be easily knocked down.
-
Never leave the house with candles burning.
-
Never put lit candles on a tree. Do not go near a holiday tree with an open flame.
Trees
-
Selection: Needles on a fresh tree should be green and not break. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Bounce the tree on the ground. If many needles fall off, the tree is dried out and has become a fire hazard.
-
Care: Place your tree away from all heat sources. Do not leave it up longer than for two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.
-
Disposal: When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly. Dispose of your tree by taking it to a recycling center or have it hauled away by a community pick up service.
Make sure you have working smoke detectors installed on every level of your home. Have and practice a family fire escape plan.
